How CO2 Extraction Works CO2 extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) to pull cannabinoids and other beneficial compounds out of hemp plant material. Here’s a simplified breakdown: Pressurizing CO2: The process starts with gaseous CO2, which is compressed until it reaches a “supercritical” state—meaning it acts like both a liquid and a gas. Passing Through Plant Material: This supercritical CO2 is passed through the hemp. Because of its unique properties, it effectively dissolves or strips away cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds. Separating & Collecting: The mixture of CO2 and the extracted hemp compounds is moved into a separate chamber. When the pressure is lowered, CO2 returns to a gaseous state, leaving behind the concentrated oil. Potential Drawbacks: Lower Yield: Because it doesn’t involve high pressure or chemical solvents, cold pressing may extract fewer total cannabinoids. Slightly Less Consistency: Variation in plant material and pressing technique can lead to slight differences in potency and composition from batch to batch. More Plant Particles: Cold pressing can result in an oil that’s richer in plant waxes and chlorophyll, which might affect taste or color.   4.
